Is it legal in Canada?

This page is general information, not legal advice; it may not be complete or current and is not a substitute for advice from a qualified Canadian lawyer or the official position of Health Canada.

How Canada regulates peptides

In Canada, peptides are regulated by Health Canada under the Food and Drugs Act and the Food and Drug Regulations, and most synthetic injectable peptides are regulated as prescription drugs [3][9]. Whether a given product is treated as a drug depends on the product and how it's marketed.

  • Authorized products carry a Drug Identification Number (DIN) — or an NPN/DIN-HM — and have been assessed for safety, efficacy, and quality. Legally available peptide medicines are obtained by prescription through licensed pharmacies [3].
  • Unauthorized products — peptides sold without that authorization, especially with implied or explicit therapeutic claims — are unauthorized drugs under the Food and Drugs Act, and Health Canada can take enforcement action against their sale and importation [3][9].

“Research use only” is not a loophole

Health Canada has stated plainly that labelling a product “For Research Use Only – Not for Human Consumption” does not make it legal or exempt from regulatory requirements, and has advised Canadians not to buy or use products labelled this way [4]. Health Canada has issued public advisories warning against injecting unauthorized peptides marketed for purposes such as anti-aging, weight loss, or wellness, and has carried out recalls and seizures of unauthorized injectable peptide products sold by specific Canadian sellers [4][9][10]. Provincial regulators have echoed these warnings [11].

At the border

Unauthorized peptides imported into Canada may be detained or seized by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) [3].

Bottom line

The regulatory reality is stricter than much online marketing implies. This page exists so you can make informed decisions with accurate information — it is not legal advice, and we don't encourage acquiring or using any product unlawfully.
